May 1-2

Kentucky Derby Weekend.   Once again, the Kentucky Derby will be shown during our happy hour which will start about 5:30. Starting about 4:30, you may watch pre-race specials on the contenders. Information on the favorites will be available to review at that time, so you can determine which horses you want to register bets. Post time is about 6:15. As usual, mint juleps will be served with a southern barbeque to follow. Don't forget your brimmed hats and big jewelry fit for the occasion. To register for the weekend, call or email Linda Cranston or contact Bill Lee no later than Thursday. Bill will lead hikes both Saturday at 11 am and Sunday at 11am. For the Saturday hike sign up with Bill via email.

Thursday, May 6 - Dumbo: Brooklyn Hts. 1 A 4 (W)   Art Galleries, Shore Front Parks & Historic Streets. A leisurely 4 mile walk through this scenic area of Brooklyn. Bring your camera. Coffee and light lunch stop in Dumbo. Then on to the Promenade and Atlantic Ave, then back to a finish in Boro Hall Area. Meet at Grand Central Terminal between info booth & track 27 at 11:30 am. May 8-9

No host scheduled. If you would like to host this weekend you must follow the winter hosting procedure and secure a permit before coming to camp. Contact Manny Sanudo or Kathy Haake by Wednesday noon.

Sunday, May 9 -    Garrison-Arden Point & Sugar Loaf South 2B7(W)   We use the Blue trail which eliminates the road walking to Sugar Loaf South. A short lunch at the Sugar Loaf view point, then back to Arden Point with its Hudson River views for a second short lunch. Afterward, a water break at the Northend viewpoint and then back to Garrison Landing. Inclement weather cancels. Trans. 5 - BUT take 10:55 am train. Drivers park/meet at commuter lot at noon. May 15-16

An IKEA Weekend.   Do you find yourself heading to IKEA just for the Swedish meatballs? Change course and head to Thendara instead! Betty and Werner Heck will prepare Swedish meatballs simmered gently in a gravy of home-made beef broth and cream, served over noodles, new potatoes, or rice, accompanied by fresh vegetables and salad. Pastry topped with fresh fruit will be dessert. On Sunday a warm, hearty breakfast and hiker's lunch will be provided. After breakfast, at 10:30 a.m., Werner & Betty will present a House Safety Workshop as part of the Gate Key Workshop series. Please register with Werner Heck, by phone or email, by Thursday, 6 pm

May 15 - Skannatati Circ. 3C9(H)   Multiple vistas in central Harriman (Pine Swamp Mountain, Lichen & Bowling Rocks) AMC hike with an early visit thru Thendara lodge. Thursday, May 20 - "1964 Worlds Fair" Grounds, Flushing Meadow Park & Flushing the 2nd China Town 1 A 4 (W)   Leisurely 4 mile walk through old worlds fair grounds, Flushing Meadow Park and then into Queens Botanical gardens and finishing in Downtown Flushing the 2nd Chinatown. May 22-23

Camp Thendara Weekend.   Join hosts Trudy and Heidi for a peaceful and relaxing weekend. There will be plenty of simple but wholesome food (appetizers, salads, deserts). Kindly register qith Heidi or Trudy by Wednesday, May 19th.

May 29-30-31

Memorial Day Weekend.   Thendara will once again be hosting the 5 Boro Bike Club. Members (and friends) will ride from New York City to spend the weekend at Thendara. Saturday night dinner will be herbivorous and carnivorous kabobs, plus Italian ice for dessert. Sunday night will be pasta so the bikers will be ready for their trek home! There will be a hike on Sunday leaving at 11:00AM. Jennifer Cartelli and Jennifer Han are your hosts. Register with Jennifer Cartelli by Thursday noon and be sure to let her know how long you will stay (Sat thru Monday?).

Thurs, June 3 - Prospect Park & Park Slope Tour & Walk 1A4 (W)   Level "1" park walk & tour of this historical area. We start from Grand Army Plaza at West Plaza St walk Mt Prospect Park and then to the Boat House, Picnic House and continuing with a tour of Park Slope ending at 9th Street & 4th Ave. Meet GCT 11:30 AM between info. booth & track # 27. June 5-6

International Sing-Along Weekend   By popular demand we are going to have an Intercontinental - Middle Eastern weekend. We'll be having Caribbean appetizer for Happy Hour with exotic drinks and Middle-eastern dishes for dinner. At night we'll be singing international music around the campfire outside along with a guitar player. Lenny Magnus and Gilad Melamed will host the weekend. Register by emailing Gilad no later than noon of Thursday, June 3rd.

June 12-13

Greek Feast at Thendara.   Do words like Briami, Dolmades, Tzatziki, Tabouli, Hummus, Baba Ganoush and Baklava make you order a Big Mac? Seize the opportunity to join the legions of the enlightened and enjoy the calming, healing and aphrodisiac qualities of Greek Cuisine. As the ancient physician, Hippocrates, proclaimed, "Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food." Happy hour includes Hippocrates Spiced Wine, Ouzo, Zythos (beer) and killer appetizers: Dolmades, Tzatziki, Hummus, Baba Ganoush and hand-baked Pita. Dinner entrees include Briami and Tabouli and for dessert, baklava. Fried eggs and leftovers are to be prepared for Sunday breakfast with Turkish coffee. Trail lunch will be provided. Kids welcome. Sunday Hike will circumambulate Pine Meadow Lake to locate the sunken graveyard (loop estimated 4-5 miles). Please contact: Marek or Monika by June 8th. Note: Due to the fact the food will be organic, prices will be slightly higher than average. Pack a musical instrument. There will be plenty of song opportunities.

Sunday, June 13 - Rye Playland Road & Park Walk (2A8)   Easy summers afternoon walk on a portion of the Westchester Shore; quiet suburban roads, Rye & Reade Preserves & a 1920's Amusement Park and Beach. Start and finish at Rye RR Sta. Bring water & lunch; snack bar food available near lunch spot & at finish. June 19-20

Camp Thendara Weekend.   Join Sharon Bonk and new co-host, Beth Malone, in welcoming summer's start. A summer-themed dinner and lots of activities which include new members' gate key workshops: Camp Safety 1-2 pm on Saturday, June 19th, Hiking workshop 6 mile hike on Sunday, June 20th at 10:30 am. Sunday's hike includes looking for mountain laurel on the Red Cross and Beech Trails (approx. 6 mile loop). Open to those who want to go as far as Hassencleever Mine and return. Reserve by Wednesday, June 16th, 9 P.M. with Beth, preferably via email.

Thursday, June 24 - Astoria Shorefront & partial Triboro Bridge Walk 1A4 (W)   Easy walk from Ditmars Station to Astoria Shore & Park, then to Old Astoria (Sunswick, once a steamboat suburb 1840's partially preserved today ) & then to Triboro Br walkway partway walk and then back to 31st. July 3-4

July 4th Weekend   As duty has taken Steve O away from his big blowout weekend with Jay this summer he has opted to host a toned down celebration of our country's independence. Kathy Haake will certainly keep him in line but rest assured the food and drink will be aplenty!! A Sunday night stay will also be considered so let us know if you are interested. Please register with Kathy via email or phone by Wednesday, June 30th.

July 10-11

Quiet Camp Weekend   Enjoy the summer weather, pick blueberries, hike and boat on Bill and Cathy's relatively quiet weekend in between July 4th bash and Jay's Birthday weekend. Kids are welcome. Fresh chicken from Goffle Road Poultry Farm and fresh farm vegetables and fruits. Register by Wednesday evening by emailing Bill Lee or Cathy Veit or call Cathy.

Sunday, July 11 - Garrison Arden Point Circ. 2B6 (W)   An easy summer version this time. No real climbing but plenty of view points. We leave from the commuter lot and go via the Blue, White & Red trails to a gazebo deep in the woods for lunch. (A modest uphill walk). Return via the Meadow Gazebo and its Catskill & Mohonk views and then to Arden Point and a 2nd short lunch opposite West Point. 2 more view points and finishing in a brief walk through Garrison landing and the vestiges of the 1968 movie set. July 17-18

Carnival Weekend.   Rio comes to Lake Tiorati as we move to the southern hemisphere for a weekend of outdoor activities. The sounds of bossa nova and samba will gently accompany the conversations (and, well, maybe the antics) around the fire pit. Ample churrasco will be washed down with that Brazilian specialty, the caipirinha, as well as caipifrutas appropriately made for our welcome younger members. Hosted by non-resident members, Jay Gordon and Mike Redden. Reserve with Mike by July 14th.

July 24-25

Don't Get Lost In The Woods' Weekend   Back by popular demand: The Basic Intro to Map and Compass course lead by Mike Sternick from NJ Search & Rescue. Course begins promptly at 10 AM and runs until 1:30 PM. Bring a bag lunch, a ruler and a compass that shows 2° increments and has a faceplate. The purpose of the course is to make sure that people learn the basics and do not get lost in the woods! Mike will be happy to answer more difficult questions. He will also cover magnetic deviation and contour maps. RSVP to Jennifer Han by Saturday, July 17, 2010. There is no charge for the course, but donations to NJSAR are encouraged and will be collected. Please park near the gate if you are not staying for the weekend. If you are only coming for the weekend, and not attending the course, sign up with Jennifer by noon, Thursday, July 22, 2010. Steve Han will be co-hosting.

Annual Kid's Weekend   Bring the family and join us for another Kids' Weekend, filled with kid food and kid fun (and alcohol for the adults). Hosts Jennifer Cartelli and Kathy Haake. Contact Jennifer to register.

August 7-8

Savor the Summer -- a lazy summer weekend at Thendara   Escape to the cool of Harriman for a relaxed weekend with Jennifer Han and new host Hope Rogers. Make the most of the dog days with swimming, boating, hiking and/or generally taking it easy. There will be a hike on Sunday morning leaving at 11:00AM with a Hiking Safety workshop for members working to obtain their gate key. Register with host-in-training Hope. RSVP by noon, Thursday, August 5th.

August 14-15

Perseids Meteor Shower Weekend   Although they peak on the 12th and 13th there should be plenty of meteors left to see over the weekend. Come learn about the night sky with George Hewitt. The planets Venus, Mars, and Saturn will all be close to the thin, crescent moon just after sunset. At 5 PM a variety of American beers and wines will be served for happy hour with a delicious array of summer appetizers. BBQ chicken and ribs, corn on the cob, and salads for dinner followed by delicious homemade desserts including moon pies. On Sunday, a hearty stick-to-the-ribs breakfast and hiker's lunch will be provided. Hosted by Werner Heck and host-in-training, George Hewitt. Register with George by noon Wednesday, August 11.

August 21-22

Camp Thendara Summer Weekend   Usual summer weekend. Hike, swim, paddle, and eat good food. Register (email preferred) by Thursday, August 19th. Host Cynthia Falls; co-hosted by Graeme Birchall.

August 28-29

Wild West Weekend   Saddle up and ride on out to the Ponderosa at Sundown for a stompin' good time. Bring your cowboy hats and giddy up with hosts Melanie Redden and Barbara Prag as we take you back to the wild west for some grub and a gut warmer in the Saloon. Contact Cowgirl Mel at by Wed August 25th. And remember...Don't squat with your spurs on!
