The club is based in a rustic lodge built atop Hasenclever Mountain in the Harriman Section of the Palisades Interstate Park. The original structure, built in 1920, is used for dining, socializing, reading or enjoying a blaze in the fieldstone fireplace. A screened-in porch, sleeping rooms and a complete kitchen are part of the lodge. The"bunkhouse," a screened sleeping house, adds to the warm weather enjoyment of the camp. Tent sites round out the overnight options.

Thendara is operated on a year-round, cooperative basis, with everyone sharing the work and costs. Members volunteer to host a weekend or midweek which entails planning the menu, providing the food and preparing a duty schedule for participants. Friendships are frequently formed while working side by side in the kitchen.

Hiking trails start at our doorstep, and a short walk down the hill leads to Lake Tiorati. Our facilities on the lake include canoes, sailboats and a swimming area. The winter brings opportunities to hike, showshoe, cross-country ski, or relax by the warm fireplace.

Native American Heritage Site Program

In a unique partnership with the Palisades INterstate Park Commission and the Bear Mountain Trailside Museum the Thendara Mountain Club has 25 volunteer stewards who monitor historical Native American rock shelters and other historical structures in the 54,000 acre park.

The purpose of this program is to preserve the important cultural resource for future generations.
